Crabs and other crustaceans feel pain and retain memories of painful experiences.
In an experiment with hermit crabs, researchers shocked the little critter’s bellies and discovered that they were quite conscious of the pain. In fact, they would temporarily flee their shells to try to get away from it.
Later, another shell would be placed in the hermit’s vicinity. The crabs who had been shocked were more likely to ditch their old digs and take up residence in the new shell.Side note: I think I just went from being a pescatarian to a full blown vegetarian.
